Gingrich, Rest of GOP Pander on Israel

They are truly outdoing themselves this time, with Gingrich going as far as claiming that the Palestinians are "an invented people" and claiming that the term "Palestinian" was only invented in 1977.

Evidently the requirements to become a historian are not what they once were-at least not to be a "historian" for Freddie Mac. The term 'Palestinion" was already used with the formation of the PLO in 1964 and that was surely far from the first use of the word.

For all this the Israelis take it with a grain of salt. They reason US policy will only change of much regardless of rhetoric. And they even find the GOP making this such a partisan issue disconcerting as they need Democratic votes as well.

It's clear what this is about though-as the Israelis noted this is an American election not Israeli. More than anything to do with Israel, the GOP is pandering to the American Jewish vote that is usually reliably liberal Democrat. The GOP is going to make as much as a mountain over a molehill as they can for when Obama spoke of a return to "pre-1967" borders.

Obama is going to be represented as "an enemy of the Jewish people." Ugly but the GOP plays to its strengths.
