Mitt Romney, Limbaugh and the Elmer Fudd Vote

Talk about letting the cat out of the bad. One of the things that the recent CNN poll showed is that Romney supporters are animated much more by their hatred of the President than any love for Mitt Romney.

Last week, Howie Carr admitted that Romney doesn't matter he's just the means to destroying Obama. Now Rush Limbaugh put it in a great way by saying that Romney's a flawed candidate but it doesn't matter, he could be Elmer Fudd it's just to defeat the Great Satan himself-our President.

And they wonder why Rommey is getting no traction?

"Well, let me tell you something. You see that and you ball up your fists and say, "What are they talking about!" It's not about them. I hate to tell you this. I mentioned this on the air some time ago. Romney, the best thing he can do is remember this election isn't about him. He may as well be Elmer Fudd as far as we're concerned. We're voting against Obama. I don't care who they put on the ticket, we're voting against Obama. That has not changed, and there are more people now than in 2010 who are gonna vote against Obama."

Howie Carr the day after the end of the RNC in Tampa

"As much as the Democrats try to change the subject, this election will be about Barack Obama, period. Mitt’s speech last night hit all the right notes, but this fight is not about him. He’s just the vessel. Now the question is, does this guy at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. who thinks the private sector is doing fine get another four years?"

For the record, the private sector has done pretty decently since January, 2010. It's been the government sector which has been shredded the last 2 years-particularly at the state and local level. But there it is again. The most fired up Romney supporters are just Obama haters.

The question is, though if hatred is enough as a campaign strategy.

"A new CNN/ORC poll out this afternoon confirms what many strategists and analysts have been saying about the conventions: that President Obama had an advantage going into the two-week stretch and comes out with a slightly bigger advantage."

"Obama takes 52 percent in the poll of likely voters -- breaking the 50 percent mark -- compared with 46 percent for Mitt Romney. When the poll is expanded to registered voters, Obama leads by an even bigger margin, 53 percent to 45 percent."

"The poll also shows that support for Obama comes largely from enthusiasm about the president himself, compared with Romney voters who are split between supporting Romney and mostly just opposing Obama. Of likely voters who support Obama, 74 percent said their vote was for him, compared with 23 percent who said they were voting against Romney. Of Romney supporters, 48 percent said their vote was for Romney and 47 percent said their vote was against Obama."

Such numbers of this might suggest there are some real risks with it.

  1. Elmer was usually cast as a hapless big-game hunter, armed with a double-barreled shotgun (albeit one which could be fired much more than twice without being reloaded - the Ultimate Clint Eastwood wet dream) and creeping through the woods "hunting wabbits". In a few cartoons, though, he assumed a completely different persona—a wealthy industrialist type; occupying a luxurious penthouse.

Personally I think Elmer looks more like Paul "PX 80" Ryan.
