Donald Trump's Real Sin on Abortion: Telling the Truth

I wrote about this yesterday.

But Huffington Post has a good piece on it today that looks at the amazing feat he achieved: he got both the prolifers and the prochoicers very upset with him.

"It was maybe the only thing a candidate could say about abortion to get both defenders of reproductive freedom and their antagonists angry, and condemnation from both sides was so swift that it managed to knock Trump a-kilter. But lost in the ensuing controversy and Trump campaign walk-backs was an essential truth: Trump was just “saying bluntly what the actual implications of longstanding Republican policies” on abortion are, co-host Zach Carter argues. Also lost: In many ways, Trump is the moderate candidate in the GOP race when it comes to reproductive rights. "

Yes. The irony is that he sort of made it sound like he's the most 'severe' on abortion of them all, a la Mitt Romney. But what really happened is he is not a real prolifer and so doesn't know their political lingo.

Worst of all was when he admitted that this will drive women into having back alley abortions. Saying that proves he's not a real prolifer as the prolife movement has denied for 20 years that back alley abortions every happened-they're just an urban legend they falsely claim.

Not surprisingly, conservatives feel betrayed by Trump-he let the cat out of the bag.

"Pro-lifers understand that abortion is a violent act against women and children. They seek to end the injustice of abortion. They discuss the issue of how to move to a society where all human life is welcomed and protected. Trump showed no understanding of the debates about how to protect vulnerable women and their children from the evil pressure to abort and whether “punishment” is appropriate."

It's pure spin. There is no moral reason that a woman who allegedly is 'killing her own baby' shouldn't be punished just as much as if she put a pillow on the face of her six month old baby. The fact that the prolifers don't go this far shows that this is a political not a moral argument.
