It has been observed that they have no idea how this is supposed to end-that is, they have no definition of what success might be.

Indeed, part of the problem is that they don't really know why they're doing this anyway as Krugman has also pointed out among others. It's that they want 'respect' and need something, anything to show that they are not impotent. We are peaking into the psychology of the hostage taker: it's all about convincing himself he is all powerful when in truth he as very little power at all.

From this perspective they're kind of sad not to say pathetic. However, even worse it shows you how homicidal this party now is: in their minds it's preferable to put the country through this than lose a little face-honestly do they really imagine they have any more credibility that hasn't been lost?
They somehow convinced themselves that this time would be different, while Govt. Shutdown 1.0 in 1995 was a huge failure, this would be different as they'd-somehow-convince everyone that the Democrats are at fault-after all, if the GOP shoots the hostage it's not their fault for doing it but the Democrats for not giving into their blackmail.
"Seventy percent of Americans disapprove of the way Republican lawmakers are approaching budget negotiations as the federal government shutdown enters its second week, a seven point jump from last week, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll published Monday."

Even Republicans are split over the GOP antics.

If the GOP isn't wining this after all, it may be in large part because they don't know why they're doing this or what they hope to get out of it. Meanwhile, Senate Republican Mark Kirk of Illinois is the first Republican to declare his support for a clean debt ceiling hike. That leaves us with only needing 5 more.
This is what makes not thinking things through before actions like this is so dangerous. No matter what spin they may try no one is confused that they are the problem.
