A Skeleton of a Deal to End Govt. Shutdown and Raise the Debt Ceiling is Taking Shape

A poll says that 60% of Americans want the entire Congress voted out.

Actually we shouldn't vote out all of our Congress critters just the Republicans. Now if that poll refers to just the House we may be getting closer to it. What a swamp the House has become!

Right now we have dueling Republican plans one from the Senate and one from the House. The Senate GOP plan inspired by Susan Collins sounds quite promising in it's broad outline:

"A bipartisan group of 10 senators -- five on each side -- are crafting a compromise that funds the government through March, lifts the debt ceiling through June, eases sequestration, and gently tinkers with Obamacare by delaying the medical device tax by two years, according to a source familiar with the outlines of the possible bargain. The tax cut would be paid for by what's known as "pension smoothing," an idea advocated by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo that raises money in the early years of the new policy. "

"If the Senate can agree to an arrangement along these lines, there would be intense pressure on House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to accept it and let it pass with Democratic and Republican votes."

You love when the House GOP talks about their plan they're working on. No one knows too much about it. The initial idea floated on Thursday night was pretty sad-only raising the debt ceiling for the next 6 weeks-we would get to revisit it just before Christmas. You have to believe that the GOPers simply love governing via crisis-or more like not governing via crisis.

At this point no one knows what the House GOP is supposedly working on. Least of all Senate Republicans who asked Obama at their meeting what the House was doing.

"Sen. John McCain said there was little mention of the House proposal in the meeting with Obama. The Arizona Republican said the president “sees progress” in the Senate."

“He referred to it. He doesn’t quite understand [the House] proposal. Nor do I,” McCain said. “The president is very reluctant to commit to anything because he has to deal with the House of Representatives. But I am encouraged by the attitude that’s been displayed.”

The establishment GOP sounds like it finally wants to stand up to the Tea Party-way too late, of course.

"From county chairmen to national party luminaries, veteran Republicans across the country are accusing tea party lawmakers of staining the GOP with their refusal to bend in the budget impasse in Washington."

"The Republican establishment also is signaling a willingness to strike back at the tea party in next fall's elections."

Actually the ascendancy of the Right wing of the GOP is many years in the making if you want to get historical about it. The establishment has been trying to shutdown the 'primitives' going back to at least Goldwater's debacle of 1964.

Things are only going to get worse.
