Will the IRS Case Be an Investigation or a Scandal?

     Jamelle Boule gets it right. While there are some legitimate questions to ask regarding the IRS and it's conduct in the past election regarding the treatment of Tea Party groups and tax exempt status it's likely that what we'll get is more scandal mongering where the goal is not so much either to get to the bottom of what happened or much less to reform it but rather as another political attack on the Obama Administration.

    "If there’s a big question — aside from the details of what actually happened at the IRS — it’s over the degree to which this will join Benghazi as fodder for Republican scandal-mongering. The New York Times has noted the extent to which the IRS scandal may be about uniting “dispirited Republicans and their conservative political base.”

     "Everyone should want Congress to get to the bottom of why IRS employees decided to go this route in applying scrutiny. But given the rhetoric of Republicans, what’s most likely to happen is yet another scandal circus, meant to generate a new round of conservative outrage at President Obama. That’s too bad, because that will make it all but impossible for us to have the broader conservation that we need to have — over whether the 501(c)4 designation has been abused by political groups on both sides."

    As the commentator Greg said the other day it may be that Tea Party groups have a high propensity to abuse the tax free designation.

    The early returns don't support the premise that the Obama Administration was involved with this but no doubt that's the sweetner in it for Darrell Issa and company.

    Of course, conservatives normally have no problem with such profiling. They usually argue there's nothing wrong with targeting Muslims as they claim that terrorists are more likely to be Muslim, or in inner cities, that Blacks are more likely to be criminals.

     Only when they seem to have been hit disproportionately, do they suddenly seem to think civil liberties matter.

     An investigation into this matter would be welcome; unfortunately this is likely to be yet another GOP scandal. Darrell Issa's goal is to have a different investigation into the President every day of the week. Is there any doubt that he wants the IRS issue to be about the President?

  1. A few questions I have;

    1) Did any of these groups get denied their 501c4 status?

    If not then jumping through a few extra hoops hardly seems a real impediment

    2) Were these groups still able to collect and spend their money as they saw fit as this "determination of C4 status" was occurring?

    If so then again, BFD, you got your exemption, you werent hindered in spending and collecting as you please. You were simply looked at very closely...... which is what I expect the IRS to do when dealing with these tax exempt loopholes.

    3) Were you guys the only ones who had to go through this?

    My sense is that there were a lot of "new" applications, especially from these right wing groups the last 4 years, so new groups will be investigated closer than ones that have already been established. I understand that their status is looked at regularly to be sure they are still doing things the right way to maintain C4 status.

    My guess is that the answers are 1) No 2) Yes and 3) No so its really another non issue issue, the specialty of our modern republicans.

    Ill tell ya Im really close to wanting to leave this country. These guys are nothing but bullies and they will be in charge for quite a while.

  2. Greg, I understand your frustration and fatigue. Still I would urge you not to leave as you're one of the few who actually gets it.
