If you watch his First Take show with Steve A. Smith he might come across as the 'sidekick' -but this guy knows his sports. He wrote 3 epic books about his Dallas Cowboys, the first covered the end of the Landry Era, the second the Jerry Jones-Jimmy Johnson divorce, the third was about their last Super Bowl team.

Regarding the Cowboys, Bayless' work is considered the gold standard for journalistic documentation as Ryan Bush tells the story of Dallas' subsequent 'lost decade' as the sequel to Bayless' work.

Now, yesterday, Skip truly impressed me. He and Smith were discussing the evenings' NBA matchups-the last game of the year. The Spurs-in a testament to how strong the Western Conference is-were in the position where if they beat Anthony Davis' New Orleans Pelicans would snap up the second seed in the West, but if they lost they would finish only sixth and be forced to play 3 road series to make the NBA Finals.
Smith actually argued that they'd win. This seemed reasonable as they came into the game on an 11 game win streak and had played lights out the last few months. Skip though, said no-and he is the world's biggest Spurs fan. He argued that he's seen them tank some important games this year and that they really didn't deserve to somehow end up number 2 in the Conference.
The thing actually that did bode badly for them, I realized at the time was that the Pelicans had to win that game-if they didn't they miss the playoffs. Still, I didn't take what Bayless said that much to heart figuring that they'd probably find a way to win.
Well, Skip was dead right. The Spurs fell behind by over 20 points in the first half and lost the game 108-103. I notice that Smith didn't even acknowledge that Skip was right; does Steve A. have a problem admitting he was wrong or that Skip was right?
Steve A went further by claiming that he had correctly guessed that the Spurs would have 103 points at least. Actually this is wrong as well. As I remember it, he had the the Spurs winning 93-88 and Skip had them losing 93-91. So he may be 'misremembering' even this.
Not that I'm trying to take away from Steve A-I love both these guys. But I got to say I'm impressed by Skip Bayless here. As he said 'Do I know my San Antonio Spurs?' Yes he does.
Now he has another improbably prediction. He says the Spurs will being a six seed win three Western playoff series on the road and make the finals again-presumably beating out Golden State?
With his record, I don't think you can laugh at that. It'll be interesting watching the Spurs in this playoffs.
As a Knicks fan, that will be almost as much fun as seeing if the Knicks can win the draft lottery. I think as long as they get Oakafor or Towns it should be good.
