For the New New York Yankees go to Detroit

Ok, at the start of the season last week I said that while most pundits seem to be pessimists about my NY Yankees and optimists about the NY Mets, this is nothing new, that the Mets are often The Boys of April.

At this point, though while the Mets don't look especially 'Amazin' until now-they did beat the favored Washington Nationals 2 of 3 but have struggled with the Braves this weekend-the Yanks do look rather mediocre so far. So at this early date the pundits look half right.

Obviously, one thing I can hang my hat on is it's very early. You can't be very confident that we have discovered anything too meaningful about the season yet. Still, keeping that in mind while the Bombers sure don't seem like the bombers anymore. the Detroit Tigers kind of do.

What has defined the Major Leagues in the last few years, is a sudden sharp drop in offensive production-which does seem to correlate quite nicely with the crackdown on steroids. At the rate we're going, we may be challenging 1968 soon for offensive futility. A large part may be a much enlarged strike zone the last few years.

Right now, however, there are some teams putting up runs, starting with the Tigers leading the pack with 47 runs in a 6-0 start. At this early stage we have 8 teams averaging close to 5 runs per game-last year not a single team did.

Of course, this proves nothing much as 6 games is much too small a sample size to draw any meaningful conclusions. Still, at least it gives some reason to hope for the league, even if there's not been too much for a Yankee fan like me to get excited for with the team. The only game they've so far their rally consisted of 2 hit batters with the bases loaded.
