Just How Awful is the GOP House? Let Us Count the Ways

There are numbers that tell the story. One number is 40-the number of times the GOP has voted to end Obamacare. However, their latest attempt-including it in the bill to keep the government  funded after Set 30 tried to tie even this to defunding Obamacare.

Another number that gets at just how bad the House GOP is-no bills, no suggestions of any bills, lots of investigations that  have no leg to stand on and lots and lots of repeal Obamacare bills. They can't pass the Senate but the House does it anyway perhaps to show how principled they are to the base. Here's another number that says a lot: 36. The number of public laws this 113th Congress has even passed.

"The data tells the same story. So far, the 113th Congress has passed 36 public laws. For comparison, the 112th Congress — the least productive Congress since we began keeping records — passed 283 public laws. At this rate, the 113th Congress is on track to be, by far, the least productive Congress on record."

Remember the old days when the Congress Harry Truman faced was considered the standard for being unproductive? So this GOP House is way behind the last GOP House. The number 36 is also less than the number 40, which as we saw above is the number of repeal Obamacare bills that have passed the House.

Boehner actually claims this is something to be proud of.

"Boehner, however, has said he rejects these metrics. "We should not be judged on how many new laws we create," he told CBS. "We ought to be judged on how many laws we repeal."

Of course, he hasn't repealed any laws. Yes he's passed 40 repeal Obamacare bills along with the latest CR bill that again attempts to defund Obamacare his House has just sent to the Senate.

However, all these have died on the Senate shelf. So the magic number here is 0: no laws repealed. Yep. Still Boehner has redefined success. If it's true that there's no success like failure then he and his House are successful indeed.

What is really sobering is that there are people who have voted for this. To be sure, helped in large part by gerrymandered districts. I think it should be clear by now that the Republican party has learned nothing from 2012. Indeed, even the one area the consensus was they did get it, on the need to pass immigration reform-they've lost it as the House continues to drag things out.

Eventually, it's going to become obvious. The only hope for this country is to elect the Democrats to every level of government. There just isn't anything the GOP can be trusted with anymore. However, Americans are slow learners so this may take years. The trouble is really procedural-the gerrymandered House and the filibustered Senate. If we had a less undemocratic form of government we'd have a pretty well functioning government.
