There is Plenty of Daylight Between Bernie and the President on Guns

Nice try Bernie, but no:

"I would say that there's about zero daylight between the president and Senator Bernie Sanders," Sanders manager Jeff Weaver said Friday afternoon during a campaign press call about New Hampshire primary strategy happening at the same time as the briefing.

"(White House Spokesman Josh) Earnest would not go so far himself, saying only “I’m not familiar with the ins and outs of his record.”

"The Clinton campaign announced a special press call Friday afternoon for its chairman John Podesta to take issue with Weaver’s “zero daylight” claim."

“When Senator Sanders’ campaign attempts to say there’s zero daylight between Sen. Sanders and the president and Sen. Sanders and Hillary Clinton,” Podesta said, “That’s just not true.”

It is not at all true. Throughout his career, Bernie has amassed a very questionable record on gun control. He voted multiple times against the Brady bill which did so much to curb gun violence until it expired. In 2005 Bernie voted with W to shield gun manufacturers from prosecution.

In 2007 he voted with W to make it harder for the FBI to collect information on unscrupulous gun dealers.

Even now when we have the more or less monthly big mass shooting, Bernie responds with a message to 'stop the shouting.'

While I don't normally agree with single issue voting, on this the President may be right when he urges us to vote single issue for a few cycles. It's tough to disagree when you watch shooting after shooting and then listen to the GOPers once again urge prayer and silence. Here is the President's op-ed in the NY Times:
"On Tuesday, I announced new steps I am taking within my legal authority to protect the American people and keep guns out of the hands of criminals and dangerous people. They include making sure that anybody engaged in the business of selling firearms conducts background checks, expanding access to mental health treatment and improving gun safety technology. These actions won’t prevent every act of violence, or save every life — but if even one life is spared, they will be well worth the effort."

"Even as I continue to take every action possible as president, I will also take every action I can as a citizen. I will not campaign for, vote for or support any candidate, even in my own party, who does not support common-sense gun reform. And if the 90 percent of Americans who do support common-sense gun reforms join me, we will elect the leadership we deserve."

Back to Josh Earnest:

"White House won't commit to supporting Sanders over guns. Obama spokesman also says Sen. Heidi Heitkamp won't get Obama's support."

There's daylight alright. Lots and lots of it.
