I've mentioned this story more than once as I think it's a sad commentary on our priorities. A homeless man died in Queens from the cold. I always just wonder what this means about our society. I mean no one thought of helping this guy? Everyone just went about their business.

I've talked about this story with some people and what they always say is that he should have gone to a shelter. Yet how about this new story where someone did help a homeless guy-she was fired for her trouble.
"Ava Lins, a 19-year-old clerk at 7-11, started making small talk with a homeless man who came into the store last Thursday night. He told her that the homeless shelter was full and he didn’t know where he was going to sleep. She told him to take a small cup of coffee, which costs about $1."

"As the homeless man left, he was confronted by the owner of the 7-11, Romany Youseff, who demanded to know if he had paid for the coffee. Lins lied to protect the man and told Yosef he had paid. The next day she admitted to Youseff that she gave him the coffee for free."
"Shortly thereafter, she was fired."
"In an interview with ThinkProgress, Lins revealed that she felt compelled to help the man because she herself had recently been homeless. Her mother kicked her out of her house at 18 and for six months she lived out of her car or on friends’ couches. She tried to get a job, but had little success because she wasn’t able to wash her clothes."

So when someone tries to help they are punished. It's as if there's an edict not to help. As we saw in this story there aren''t always available homeless shelters. This is not an isolated incident either.

It turns out that some cities have been successful in doing something for these homeless people.

Under Mayor Blasio there has been some effort to rectify the problem-at least helping the homeless people on trains. It's a start though there's a long way to go.
I kind of like writing this kind of piece after revealing I now am no longer poor-and will soon be quite confortably well off. This shows that liberals aren't only concerned about the poor because they are poor themselves-I've heard conservatives that make it sound like this.
Greg said this:
"Congrats on the elevation of tax brackets. You now have the privilege of paying more into the system which supported you so well while you were down ( cough cough)"

As it's a lump sum payment I'm not even really going to have a very high tax bracket usually.
