Ignore the Spin: We Won in Wisconsin!

The spin in the mainstream media seems to be that liberal Democrats lost Tuesday in Wisconsin or indeed, even that Scott Walker-and GOP-won. I just don't buy this.

The idea that the Democrats "failed" seems to have wide currency among many progressives along with the media. Yet we just picked up 2 senate seats in Republican districts in special, unusual elections. Because we didn't win a third this makes it a failure?

If it was a win for Walker why is he suddenly talking about working with the minority? This doesn't sound like typical Scot Walker talk. For that matter why is the state GOP hunkering down now and fitfully trying to change recall laws if they won and there is no threat?

After the election Walker sounded-very uncharacteristic for him-conciliatory saying that he wants to "work together for jobs" with the minority, and that's what "Wisconsin wants." Either he does know there's a message to him or he has just had a lobotomy for the Scott Walker we know and don't so love never talks of working with Democrats for jobs or anything else.

And yes there should be an investigation by someone about Waukesha country clerk Kathy Nickolaus because this is not the first time she has been there to throw the vote for the GOP. She has been at this for years, dating back to 2007 at least.

Much less publicized, the two Wisconsin wins were not the only recall victories of the day for the Dems. They also won a recall in NH where "former Democratic state Rep. Bob Perry has crushed Republican Honey Puterbaugh with over 58 percent of the vote."

The "special election filled the House seat previously held by GOP Rep. Martin Harty, who resigned after telling a constituent that “the mentally ill, the retarded, people with physical disabilities and drug addictions - the defective people” should be “shipped off” to “Siberia…to freeze to death and die and clean up the population."

So don't listen to anyone be they a Republican operative, the mainstream media, or some anti-Democrat firebagger tell you that this was not a win. It wasn't a grand slam but it was still a home run.

Next on the dock: recall Walker next November.

  1. I believe you are correct regarding the spin about Wisconsin's recall has not been favorable. I am also not surprised that the NH recall received no coverage. Remember, the spin regarding the recent special election in your own state of New York. The GOP tried to play that down too.
It's becoming obvious that there is a definite shift in the political structure and I think those who are downplaying the recent victories are becoming fearful of that shift. That's why it is so important for our party to grab the conversation and control the dialogue. We have to push back against this wave of negativity. For every negative comment made, it takes 10 positive comments to erase the one negative one.
I suspect that the naysayers are hoping that we'll let it go if we believe the spin that is being put out. We've done it before because we're not disciplined enough. We're passionate, but that does not always convert into discipline. I don't think we have to be rude or obnoxious either. But it does mean we'll have to work harder. As it’s been said before, the GOP is the party of “No”. So it makes sense for them to frame the conversation as “the progressives lost” the recall effort. They’re hoping people will confuse the issue of what we did achieve which in my opinion was huge.
I think Walker is very worried because the whole state gets to vote. Many of us here in Wisconsin could not vote in those elections because they were not in our district. That was frustrating because we wanted to strike a blow to the GOP incumbents too. Their actions affected all of the state. We could make phone calls, donate time and money, and provide whatever support we could, but in the end couldn’t vote. When Walker is recalled, we can follow through in the voting booth. Then we can rebuild our state.

  2. Thank you Shelly. That comment menu wasn't very nice-calling you anonymous! LOL.

Thank you for your comment, as you're from the badger state I know you are particularly conversed about this.

Main thing is like you said we can't allow the negative nellies to discourage us. The great thing about my cohost TurboKitty is she is this fount of information and can tell you all the states that recalls are going on in!

Things are going particularly well in NH actually with that 2nd recall win with more recalls to go.

We won Tuesday and Walker know this!
