David Lawrence and Mary Kay Latourneau: Talk About a Dream Walking

My mind has kind of taken this weird turn as I just watched that movie with Adam Sandler again 'That's My Boy' where as like a 13 year old kid he had an affair with his teacher and she had a son-played by Andy Sandberg

It's a pretty crazy subject but it got me to thinking. Remember what David Lawrence said all those years ago about the nature of modern bourgeoisie society: the whole idea of the Mommy society or Mommy-Daddy-Me? And it occurs to me that only now in 'late capitlaism'-assuming it is 'late' and it's not just the wishful thinking of Marxists-that we as a society that has what Zizek calls the ability to get to the 'truth of our desire'-or as Nietzsche put it, only now that we have the 'courage of our desires.'

Let's say that modern bourgeoisie society truly is this desire to fuck our mothers-only now has our society admitted it. Take that song 'Stacy's Mom.' Finally the truth our one's desire.

So this would be a dream for Lawrence who still dreamed of having it both ways-he wanted to resists bourgeois matriarchy with retaining a certain feudalistic patriarchy-ergo, his hero in Sons and Lovers wanted it both ways-he wanted his wife but he wanted to also have romantic love with a man at the same time. It would be his nightmare come to life.

Not to be. To me, there's nothing more natural than the idea of sexual relationship between a female teacher and a male student. I mean what possible social relationship could be more vulnerable to Freud's 'transferrence' than this one? I just did a google search for female teachers and students and I had way too many results to even begin to count. I came across this one story where this teacher was just let out of prison early and one of the 3 students she had sex with-she actually got pregnant by him-is complaining that she's gotten way too light a sentence-only about a year. True she does lose her teaching license so that she takes a major hit in Zizek's Symbolic Order which she may never be able to gain back.

Still, a year's not very much time. I see his point in a way-a male teacher who had a relationship with a female student would likely get much more time-and probably that's a good thing. However, it's just possible that the sexes in this are different here. As I said above, the trouble with the female teacher male student relationship is it's so primeval, it's society's most basic and deepest relationship-that of a mother and her son. Our bourgeois society is really composed of a kind a female clergy. I mean this is not appreciated-it was by woman haters like Lawrence and Wylie-recall his fulminations of 'Momism' back in the 1940s.  This was only 65 years before Stacy's Mom. Most people don't notice it.

Children today experience their formative years with mostly female authority figures-mothers, teachers, den mothers, mothers running car pools, on the PTA, planning birthday parties, sleep overs, play dates.

A female teacher is a kind of priestess of the state. She introduces children- both boys and girl's to society's rules and mores. She is something like a mother-accept even more powerful as she's a kind of den mother of education and social rules. If you think of Plato's Republic, the guardians in modern society are mostly female-it was not the case at all in previous premodern society.

So that so many female teachers as well as their young male students should get seduced by this relationship is hardly surprising.

My apologies for this flight of fancy but I f\ind this very interesting and felt it needs to be said. Don't worry I'll hit Sumner in the next post.

I think that maybe we do take women with young males differently than vice versa. Yet, I can defend this by appealing to Nietzsche of all people-who was supposed to be the ultimate woman hater when he pointed out in The Gay Science that while humankind is innocent, women are doubly innocent. Who has oil and kindness enough for them?

Notice that not all male students believe they are victims-while the one in the above link certainly did. Look at Mary Kay Latorneau and Vili Faulaau.
