A Little Known Fact About Eli Manning in 2014

The little known fact is that he's actually having a very good year, even a career year.

These are his best numbers ever. This has not been understood. Most people seem to think he's had a bad year this year. What they don't get is that while the team was disappointing-until the last 3 games-the QB has played very well. He now has a career best 93.5 QB rating, a career best 64.1% completion rate and at this point at least with one game to play a career best TD to Int ratio of better than 2 to 1-he's had a ratio of about 2 to 1 a number of times which kind of belies the belief that he's a interception machine.

Actually, a lot of people seem to think he's been an interception machine this year. He had that one bad game in the 16-10 loss to the 49ers-which they should have had-where he had one touchdown but five picks. However, take out that game an in the other 14 games he had 28 TDs and just 8 picks which is close to a 3 to 1 TD to interception ratio.

UPDATE: I can actually make my case even stronger and since I really, really like Eli-just a great guy-and I think the Giants should give him a long term contract after the season ends, no questions asked rather than make him play 2015 as a 'lame duck' on the last year of his contract-I will do that.

You can make the case that if you throw out the first 2 games of the year-he didn't start the year playing well with 3 TDs and 4 Ints-then in the since then in the final 13 games-taking out the Niner game-he had 25 TDs and 4 Ints in that stretch. I'm just saying.

To be sure in those 14 games the Giants are just 6-8 but surely no one is going to say that Eli's play is in anyway the problem, it's only thanks to his play the team has any chance at all.

Yes, Odell Beckam Jr. is going to do a lot to make Eli a lock for Canton the next few years-as always in the NFl, assuming health. Which is another great thing about Eli: he ha still never missed a start in his entire career.

On the other hand OBJ missed his first 4 games with the hamstring but certainly made up for it that last 10 games where he's cinched Rookie of the Year and has 'pulled a Moss'-which refers to the point that it's very rare for a receiver like him to have such an immediate impact on the league.

"The Giants' rookie phenom torched an overmatched St. Louis secondary on his way to eight catches for 148 yards and two touchdowns. Beckham now has 79 receptions for 1,120 yards and 11 touchdowns -- amazing production given he missed the first four weeks with a hamstring injury. Beckham is an absolute lock for Offensive Rookie of the Year and may even snag a few MVP votes. People need to understand how rare it is for a rookie wide receiver to hit the ground running as a superstar. Beckham pulled a Moss."

The Rams surely talked a lot about what they would do to Beckam in the week before the game and when they couldn't back up all this big talk on the field got pretty dirty.

It's rather laughable that Jeff Fischer claimed the Giants were dirty as they came in one of the least penalized teams in the league while the Rams come in the most penalized. The Rams were taking cheap shots on Beckam and the Jints had to protect their guy. If the Rams played nearly as well as they talked it would be more impressive.

Don't get me wrong, this game was very impressive in the sense of how good the Rams defense has been this year-they torched a defense that hadn't given up a TD in 3 games.

Overall, the Giants have to figure out how to get more players around Eli and Beckam-who next week as a chance to tie Michael Irving with 9 straight games with at least 90 yards. Who would have thought that after the way the Eagles trashed us last time-a 27-0 wipeout in Week 7 that started the Giants 7 game losing streak that when the two teams played again the Eagles would be just as eliminated as the Giants!

For much of the season there was no one to help Eli as the running game has been inconsistent, the offensive line during the Eagles game in particular was terrible and the defense was porous. However, the team has played much better-of course waiting till after they're eliminated. The defense has been much better too.

Overall, the team looks a lot like last year's team that had an 0-6 start but played better at the end of the year. Still, I would argue that this team is much better than last years, even though the Giants need a win next week just to tie last year-s 7-9 mark.

Last year's team was outscored 294-383 which was actually a very bad sign-point differential is a key statistic. When a team's PD is much higher than would be suggested than their won-loss record it's a bad sign-that actually they're not as good as their record. The Giants last year were 7-9 but their PD suggested a 5-11 or 4-12 season-maybe even 3-13.

Comparatively, this year's team is 6-9 with one left to play but they've been outscored by only 12 points-366-354. Their offense with 354 points in 15 games compared with last year's 294 in 16 games is much improved.

Eli's numbers under the West Coast offense-obviously helped a lot by Beckam-are night and day. Last year he had 18 TDs vs 27 Ints and his worst QB rating since his rookie season at 69.4-this year has his his beast with a 93.5 with one left to play. His completion rate last year was under 58 while this year it's a career best over 64.

So this is definitely a much better QB on a better team that now has Beckam and next year a health Victor Cruz. There is no doubt a lot of work for the Giants front office in the off season but the team is now going in the right direction and the talk of Coughlin in trouble is surely over now.
