What's Next for Marco Rubio?

This morning I saw someone from his team on CNN with more talk of Trump University and his high unfavorables in the party.

It seems almost embarrassing for Rubio to be discussing who's unelectable and who isn't seeing as he didn't win a single delegate last night at least as of this writing.

His stepped up attacks on Trump have been totally counterproductive. Interesting that his team is still so focused on them now.

For whatever reason, Chuck Todd has given Marco Rubio his own Town Hall meeting in Florida tonight. Just him while Hillary and Bernie debate in Florida.

But what's really going on? The campaign can talk about Trump's unfavorables or hypothetical one on one match-ups all they want. It's all about the delegates and they are drowning. On Saturday in 4 races Rubio got 13 delegates. Last night it was zero. Where do you go from here?

"Marco Rubio's presidential campaign and those close to the Florida senator are engaged in deep conversations about the future of his presidential bid."

"The topic of dropping out before next Tuesday's Florida primary has been raised and was not summarily dismissed. It is an option being weighed, but it is unknown how seriously."

"That it is even on the table speaks to the depth of existential angst within Rubio's camp after a night of demoralizing setbacks in Michigan, Mississippiand Idaho. Rubio did not qualify for a delegate in any of these states and registered only 9 percent in Michigan and 5 percent in Mississippi. A‎mong the questions Rubio advisers debated somberly after Tuesday's results was what effect his poor showings would have in his home state of Florida. Another prominent question: how would a loss in Florida next Tuesday affect Rubio's long-term political future, including a possible run for governor in 2018?"

"His spokesman insists they have to go to Florida, that Rubio is the only one who can win the state."

"Alex Conant, a senior strategist for the Rubio campaign, vehemently denied any conversations about quitting the race before Florida. He said anyone who was surprised by ‎Tuesday's poor showing "was not paying attention" and that no one advising Rubio has ever suggested he drop out before next Tuesday."

"Conant added Rubio told senior late Tuesday he was committed to the Florida primary and to set the schedule accordingly."

‎"Marco is only candidate who can beat Trump there -- especially when you consider all the early votes already cast," Conant said, adding it was time for everyone on team Rubio "to buckle up.

I think those of us paying attention, can see how his campaign has sunk since he started trying to out Trump Donald Trump. But even still, who could have imagined he'd get 13 delegates in the last eight contests?

Rubio has 151 delegates when 1237 is the target. He trails Cruz by about 200 and Trump about 300. He could win Florida and still have no path. It's all in the hope that the GOP at their convention will usurp the wishes of the voters and impose Marco Rubio on them.

This from such and allegedly optimistic, forward looking campaign.

Meanwhile the Establishment is gingerly embracing-Ted Cruz?!
GOP establishment creeps toward Cruz

'Ted is the only possibility to stop Trump,' says a Bush loyalist.

"Republican elites are begrudgingly embracing Ted Cruz—and hanging Marco Rubio out to dry."

"Panicked at Donald Trump’s dominance and dismayed by Rubio’s continued inability to do anything about it, some top Republican power brokers are turning to Cruz, putting aside their policy and personal misgivings to back the candidate they now openly label as their best hope to stop Trump’s GOP takeover."

“He seems to be the only guy who’s got some momentum, and is probably the best situated if there is anybody out there to beat Trump,” said Austin Barbour, a prominent Mississippi-based GOP operative. “That’s why there are many people like me—Ted Cruz wouldn’t have been our first choice, but as we go through the process, we’re reevaluating our vote, and he seems to be the guy at the top of the list.”

“Most people now think Ted’s the best vehicle to defeat Trump,” said Charles C. Foster, a Bush family loyalist from Houston who served on Jeb Bush’s national finance team. “I would say some are enthusiastic for Ted, some are just saying, ‘OK, Ted’s not my first choice, but anyone that can beat Trump, I’ll support.’”

“That’s a big motivating factor,” he continued. “I think Ted is the only possibility to stop Trump.”

  1. Erick Erickson is speculating that Cruz and Rubio have a deal:

Trump could make it interesting and offer either one of them a supreme court appointment (maximum pro-life pick).

  2. Also, Rubin has been calling for Rubio to call it quits (for a day or two now).

  3. Yes, I saw that. Rick Scott is refusing to endorse him and Ted Cruz is now getting some endorsements

  5. I'm just focused on getting rid of Rubio right now. I have no idea about VPs and all the speculation.

I doubt Trump goes with Rubio. Hopefully not.

  6. What do you mean 'goes to'-you mean uses him for VP? Why would he do that?

Anyway, my hope is this is the end of Rubio. That he''s nowhere on the ticket.

    1. Yes, I know. But some elements of the #NeverTrump crew would LOVE to see Rubio on a Cruz ticket. I know you'd HATE that. In fact, I bet it would make you despise Cruz nearly as much as you do Rubio.
