WSJ Editorial Page's Backhanded Compliment for Harry Reid

They've all been off tilt on Republican La La Land over the weekend with RNC chariman Reince Priebus and Senator Lindsay Graham attacking Harry Reid for lying-as if they know. As Reid's spokesman said today, they're a bunch of cowardly henchmen:

"They’re a bunch of cowards, and they’re avoiding the issue,” said David Krone, Reid’s chief of staff, in an interview with POLITICO on Sunday night. “Lindsey Graham, Reince Priebus — they’re a bunch of henchmen for Romney, and they’re all reading off the same talking points. They couldn’t hold a candle to Harry Reid.”

"Krone added: “What Harry Reid said is the fact of what he was told. To turn it around, all their childish rants this weekend about calling Reid a ‘liar’ and all that, it just shows you how scared they are that Harry Reid was telling the truth.”

Also you have to love Nancy Pelosi backing up her boy, Harry Reid today:

"Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid isn’t cowering from his claim that Mitt Romney didn’t pay taxes for a decade, and now Reid’s got backup from another powerful Hill Democrat: Nancy Pelosi.

"In an interview with the Huffington Post, the House minority leader defended Reid’s publicly unsubstantiated assertion – a claim that reignited the controversy over the presumptive GOP presidential nominee’s tax returns."

"Harry Reid made a statement that is true. Somebody told him. It is a fact," Pelosi told the Huffington Post. “Whether he did or not can easily be disposed of: Mitt Romney can release his tax returns and show whether he paid taxes."

You go Harry Reid! You go Nancy Pelosi! But best of all was the attack piece on the Wall Street Journal this morning that says it all. Sometimes it's what your enemies say about you that you really relish. This snarky hit piece on Reid shows that he has played an inspired hand with this.

In that vein, I recommend that if you haven't you consider calling Reid's office to thank him for the way he's calling Romney out here. 1-202-224-3542. I just called, although I'm not a New Yorker.

Here's the WSJ accusing Reid of not "keeping it classy."

"Who is this Deep Throat? Mr. Reid won't say, and it isn't clear how someone who merely invested with Bain would know anything about Mr. Romney's personal taxes. But Mr. Reid and his spokesman want everyone to know that he or she or it is an "extremely credible source." You have to love that "extremely" touch."

"Mr. Romney has responded by denying the charge and saying it's time for Mr. Reid "to put up or shut up." Other Republicans are calling Mr. Reid a "liar," which Mr. Reid will consider a professional compliment.
Mr. Romney's problem is that he can only disprove the charge by releasing his tax returns, which he says he will not do for years other than 2010 and 2011. Mr. Reid knows this, which is why he has thrown out the unproven accusation from an unknown source. If someone calls him a liar, no one can prove that either.
Meanwhile, his claim will hang in the air as the media report the political back and forth. Like the Obama campaign, Mr. Reid wants to change the conversation from the lousy economy and unpopular Democratic policies while destroying Mr. Romney personally. Note that the Obama campaign is not disavowing Mr. Reid's charges. (As an "extremely credible source" told us, Mr. Reid coordinated his accusations with the Obama . . . . We made that up, but you get the idea.)"

"These columns argued in January, when other Republican Presidential candidates raised the tax issue, that Mr. Romney should have released his tax returns long ago to put the matter to rest. This is one of the ways in which the GOP candidate has made his challenge harder than it should be."

So they admit that Romney has played an inspired hand of poker, I mean what a bluff. As they admit, Romney can't really disprove anything unless he releases his taxes as everyone, including the WSJ itself, has urged.

They try to save a little face by rapping Reid's knuckles for such an "unclassy" move:

"But without any proof, Mr. Reid's accusations are a smear from the fever swamps that say more about Mr. Reid's ethics than they do about Mr. Romney's taxes."

Sure it does! Even the WSJ knows that's baloney, but this is the weak hand their left with. Keep it going Harry! You go Nancy!
