Kristol: GOP Will Have to Compromise Much More Than They Think

     He also said that it won't destroy the country to raise taxes on the rich, so he was certainly on top form this morning on Fox.

      Kristol just made too much sense today. Many of the GOPers on today's talk shows did. Some at least are saying the things that they should say if they get it.

      "Conservative columnist Bill Kristol said that Republicans will have to give in to President Obama's and Democrats' demands more than they would like to in the next four years because "elections have consequences," during an appearance on "Fox News Sunday."

      "I think Republicans will have to give in much more than they think," Kristol said. He believes Obama will be able to pass major, consequential legislation in his second term.

     "Four presidents in the last century have won more than 51 percent of the vote twice: Roosevelt, Eisenhower, Reagan and Obama," Kristol said. "I think there will be a big budget deal next year. It will be an Obama-type budget deal much more than a Paul Ryan-type budget deal."

      Elections have consequences. So Kristol clearly gets it. I think the 2nd term will be very positive for Obama as well. But it's striking to hear Kristol say it.

       And you have conservatives like Lindsay Graham who claim they get it and want to pass immigration reform.

       This is not to say it will be easy. The Dems will have to play tough and never let the GOP forget that elections have consequences. However, everything we've heard from them so far suggests they will. They ran a very strong campaign and have positioned themselves very well thus far post-election.

        Right now you have GOPers making much of the idea that they support "raising revenue." On the one hand this is just more spin. Their "revenue" is just the revenue they presume they will get from higher tax revenues due to higher growth from cutting taxes on the rich-both individual and corporate.

         Still, that they even use the phrase "raising revenue" shows that this election has already changed at least their vocabulary-always the first step to changing a position.
