The Florida Sun Sentinel Sure Knows How to Hurt Marco Rubio

His hometown paper and who's it endorsing? Non one, the Sentinel says as the kind of candidate we'd like to endorse isn't running.

The editorial board for the Florida Sun Sentinel has refused to make an endorsement for the GOP primary because “the kind of person who should be running is not in the race.”

“We cannot endorse businessman Donald Trump, hometown Sen. Marco Rubio or Texas Sen. Ted Cruz because they are unqualified to be president,” the editorial board wrote Monday. “Ohio Gov. John Kasich is the best of the bunch, but if you measure a candidate by the caliber of his campaign, Kasich's lack of traction and organization make a vote for him count for little.”

"The paper had previously backed former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush before he dropped out of the race in February."

“We favored the adult in the room, Jeb Bush, a smart, experienced and principled conservative. But the nation wasn't ready for another Bush, and our former governor wasn't ready for the anti-establishment edge in today's Twitter-fueled campaign era," the editorial board wrote Monday."

"The newspaper then goes on to break down each candidate and the flaws with their campaigns."

Ouch. Here's what they say about Rubio:

"If you think Marco Rubio can unite the Republican Party under a winning banner, vote for him. But remember that he has almost no experience and has done little but run for office. Then, when he gets in office, he doesn't go to work very much. He holds the worst attendance record in the U.S. Senate."

"Because Rubio has failed to do his job as a senator, broken the promises he made to Floridians and backed away from his lone signature piece of legislation on immigration, we cannot endorse him for president."

"Without question, Rubio has a great personal story and tremendous political skills. He is smart and knows the issues beyond the talking points, no matter that one rote debate performance."

"But Rubio is not the new-age Republican he claims to be. His positions on abortion, same-sex marriage, immigration, gun control, government surveillance and Cuba are those of yesteryear. And unlike Trump, Rubio is reliant on big donors who will expect big favors down the road."

"Rubio's strongest suit appears to be foreign policy, but his neoconservative views should give voters pause. In an October interview about ISIS, for example, he advocated a no-fly zone over Syria that would take down any Russian jets there, too. Asked if he thought a military conflict with Russia would scare the American people, he said, "Sure. But the consequences of not doing anything would scare them even more."

"Let us be clear: war with Russia is the last thing this war-weary nation wants and it was alarming to hear Rubio so cavalierly roll the dice. Fortunately, more considered minds from the U.S., Russia and other powers last month negotiated a cessation of hostilities in Syria's civil war."

"We recognize that Rubio and Ted Cruz are the party's best shot at stopping Trump. If Rubio can secure Florida's winner-take-all primary, and certain other cards play out, perhaps Trump won't cross the finish line and another candidate can emerge at a brokered convention."

"But a vote for Rubio should be more than a protest vote."

"Rubio lacks the experience, work ethic and gravitas needed to be president. He has not earned your vote."

You know what also has to hurt? What Jeb Bush's friends are saying about him.

Joy Reid tweets:

I asked one longtime Jeb friend/onetime Rubio fan whether Jeb wants Rubio to win. Answer was, "he'll support the Republican nominee."

"Next question: "will Jeb step forward to help Rubio win Florida?" Answer: "Rubio will do fine." Not exactly a ringing endorsement."

Finally, a number of Rubio advisers are arguing he should get out before Florida.
"A battle is being waged within Florida Sen. Marco Rubio's campaign about whether he should even remain in the Republican presidential race ahead of his home state primary on March 15, sources say."

"Rubio himself is "bullish" on his odds of winning the critical primary, despite some advisers who are less hopeful and believe a loss there would damage him politically in both the short- and long-term."

"Publicly, the campaign is maintaining they are still a contender in this race, touting a Sunday win in Puerto Rico's primary that delivered Rubio 23 delegates. But privately, the campaign is having a debate about whether he should remain in the mix -- even for his home state of Florida's primary."

"He doesn't want to get killed in his home state," one source familiar with the discussions said, noting "a poor showing would be a risk and hurt his political future."

To be sure, you could argue that leaving now before Florida would be just as negative as it would suggest Rubio knows he won't win.

Meanwhile-yes, I really like bad Marco Rubio news-Ted Cruz is campaigning in Florida for the best reason imaginable. Not to win, but to make sure that Rubio loses-and therefore Trump wins.

"Ted Cruz is threatening to make one of the biggest gambles of the 2016 season: diving into Florida to knock off Marco Rubio.

"Cruz has little chance of winning the March 15 Florida primary, but he’s showing signs he might compete by opening field offices and sending surrogates to stump in the state while his super PAC prepares to strafe Marco Rubio with a seven-figure ad buy."

"The aim: pull enough voters away from Rubio to ensure Donald Trump wins the state’s 99 delegates and deny the Florida senator any pick-up opportunity elsewhere by forcing him to defend his turf. Doing that gives Trump a bigger lead in delegates, but it means Cruz has calculated he can catch up."

“Cruz thinks he can do well against Trump in a head-to-head race. And he needs to kill Rubio to do it,” said Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute, whose survey released showed Trump leading Rubio 38 percent to 30 among Florida Republicans."

Regarding Rubio, this tweet by the Democratic PPP polling firm says it all:

"The GOP fight for Ohio is a true toss-up, finds @ppppolls. Trump: 38%, Kasich: 35%, Cruz: 15%, Little Marco: 5%. http://ow.ly/Zbkdq

Yep-little Marco. That's become a thing. Another Trump thing.

Ok. I keep saying 'one more thing.' Here is the last thing-unless I think of anything else while I'm writing about it.

Trump has some pretty good anti Little Marco ads out now around the indubitable fact that the little guy is more than a little corrupt.
