Glenn Beck Begs for Guidance on Trump's Appeal

He made this impassioned plea a few days ago on Facebook

"This is not an attack, this is an honest question. I will delete and ban any vulgar or hateful answer."

"I really want to understand."

"I get that Trump is reflective of what people are feeling; secure the border; fight to win; don't give in to china etc. I really do understand that he is saying things that people are feeling. Justifiably."

"I get the fact that he is saying that America is a great place and that we can be great again. That is rare and refreshing."

"I understand that he is seen and has the proof in New York City, as a guy who can get things done."

"I understand and like the fact that he just says what he is thinking. No politically correct bs; no focus groups and he does it with out apologizing."

"But here is what I don't understand."

"He is part of the problem when he by his own admission, buys politicians; he said he identifies his "policies more as a democrat"; he makes President Obama look truly humble; he was very pro abortion until very recently; he still says "don't defund planned parenthood"; he is pro "assault weapon ban"; he is in favor of a wealth tax that would just "take money out of people's bank accounts"; he is for boots on the ground in Iraq and 'taking the oil' from the Iraqi people; he is a progressive 'republican'; he says single payer health care works; he said he would give people more than just Obama care; the First Lady would be the first to have posed nude in lesbian porno shots; he said that he keeps all the bibles he is given in a "special place" out side the city - and he only goes to church on Christmas and Easter; he is generally not a likable guy; he has around 16% favorability with Hispanics and he has gone bankrupt 4 times."

"This is an honest question. I really want to understand:"

"Why are big name "conservatives" supporting him? I get it if you are tired of politicians, a republican progressive, or you are only about winning (although those who say they would NEVER vote for him is over 50% of REPUBLICANS). Perhaps you are angry and you just want to make someone pay or just want something done and you don't care how it gets done, but what PRINCIPLES does he have that they are attracted to?"

"I am not talking about the average Joe, I am talking about Sean Hannity or Ann Colter. How about Savage or Rush?"

"These are smart people. What am I missing? Just based on his favorability ratings he could never win in a general. Research shows that he may be near his ceiling now."

"Are they just trying to hold on to those disenfranchised republicans and keep them in the fold? (Maybe I am wrong for not holding my tongue) I think that is a good goal, but that doesn't seem to ring true to me as they are actually fighting for him, at least in the case of Ann."

"I want the system to play itself out and I want the people to decide. It is why I didn't like idea of a ban of him on the radio show while I was gone. (Although that was misrepresented. Pat and stu didn't want to talk about him for two days)"

"I really do want him to be heard as I think it is important to discuss the things like the border. I wish he would bring up the fed and money printing. But I just don't understand those who claim conservative, small government values and principles saying he is their man. Am I misreading what they are saying?"

"I understand Bernie Sanders 30-50% of democrats are really die hard socialists. The question remains: is 25% of the GOP trump style 'conservatives."

"Please let's have a respectful dialogue. I am not trying to tear him down, I am stating my opinion. Can we actually have a civil discourse based on facts? Not on emotion or feelings."

"(I think those are important but like I did in the beginning of this please recognize those as such. They are important and valid but that is not the same as policies or principles)"

I think the problem is that Beck is suggesting that those who support Trump are not conservatives but he himself is not in tune with the GOP base. If he were this wouldn't be so puzzling. It's like when the Wall Street Journal wonders how Ted Cruz can mock it as not conservative:

"For many conservatives, it would seem unwise to pick a fight with one of the most important editorial pages on the Right. The ed board, which espouses the pro-business, muscular foreign policy approach of traditional Republicanism, continues to have an outsized voice in highbrow conservative circles, and the paper itself delivers news intravenously to Wall Street executives and the megadonors that fuel presidential campaigns."

"In an era where print newspapers have long been on the decline, the one exception is the editorial page and the op-ed page of the Wall Street Journal for Republican primary voters especially. They’re the gold standard," said Ari Fleischer, a former press secretary to President George W. Bush."

"Calling the paper a front for Rubio, Fleischer added, is "a wrong read of the Wall Street Journal editorial page…They’re a consistent voice for conservatism, especially on economics and supply side Reaganomics."

But the folks voting for Trump and Cruz-they combined have 71 percent support in Iowa-care nothing about 'supply side' economics.' Rush Limbaugh himself has touched on the fact that Trump is not about conservatism or even the Tea Party.

Glenn Beck thinks this is just the Tea Party. But that has morphed into something else now. The Tea Party was still controlled by conservative libertarian types. The Trumpist movement has nothing to do with conservatism much less libertarianism.

P.S. Meanwhile, after Paul Ryan's 'betrayal', Howie Carr is already raising the bloody shirt-yep, maybe it's time for a third party he thinks.

Just to remind my esteemed readers, I've been arguing for months that the GOP is headed for a schism. Heck, we're already in the middle of it.

  1. What do you think the GOP establishment will learn from this whole Trump thing? I think they'll learn that they need to step up their voter disenfranchisement efforts: it's not safe to let white trash vote either.

  2. As I said in my last sentence, this may be the end of the line for the party. There could be a third party as Carr suggests or if not at least a real shakeup.

I think the genie is out of the bottle and won't be able to go back to the pre Trump status quo

  3. My wife, who is far from a political junkie but listens to all the mainstream news (and is a quite astute judge of people I must say) just conceded the presidency to Trump.

She has mostly been laughing at him (not in a point your finger kind of way) and listened to my argument a week ago where I told her I preferred him over every other GOP candidate. She actually nodded in agreement with my argument that Trump was probably less offensive as a potential president than Rubio, Cruz Bush, Paul etc...... given the caveat that he in fact didn't believe his own hype and didn't act like the megalomaniac that he sounds like (which I argued he likely wouldn't)

Well after the most recent Hillary/Trump exchange (and my wife loves/respects Hillary) my wife fears Trump would end up making Hillary look exactly like her detractors say she is.... untrustworthy/dishonest/bitchy/entitled..... he just is a better arguer. Not in the sense that he makes better arguments cuz he doesn't but study after study has shown that audiences do NOT listen to contents of arguments but react off the optics and Trump will win the optics between him and Hillary. I think she may have a point

  4. Interesting. I think she is being a little pessimistic but I understand her premise. At this point the gloves haven't really come off with Trump yet.

I for one have certainly been pulling my punches on Trump. In a general, the Hillary team and all the liberal bloggers will no longer take it easy on him. Let's face it, many like me I suspect-even the Hillary team-want him to be the nominee.

I am right now though finishing a piece where I shake my head at the media's false equivalence. After telling us for six weeks that Trump's Muslim stuff is irresponsible and false they are now upbraiding Hillary for saying the exact same thing on Saturday.

The latest adventures in false equivalence!

  5. Yes, I already read that piece and it is spot on.

The thing about my wife is that until yesterday she had pretty much dismissed Trump as an interesting novelty (though I did convince her that even as is he's better than Rubio Bush) AND assumed Hillary would be the professional politician and not get drawn into a mud fight. I think she watched tapes of Hillarys reactions to Trump, her comments during the debate and other places and compared it to Trumps reactions and comments....... and got a genuine fear that Hillary does have some real chinks in her armor that Trump, and probably only Trump, can effectively expose and take advantage of. She said that she thinks Donald might say something that could really make her lose her shit, or appear to anyway.

Trump is an effective debater, not because he has a better grasp of issues but because he knows how to push peoples buttons, knows how to dismiss his own gaffes and lets face it ..... when a man loses his shit we find all kinds of reasons for it, when a woman does it its a sign she might be unstable.

However, a president Trump is still the 2nd best option of the 5
