Romney Smacked Down By Ambassador Steven's Father

Yes! Romney is denied again for trying to politicize Libya. This is great news and hopefully the President's team is all over this. There is no question that Romney will try to further politicize the tragedy on Tuesday night. However, Christopher Steven's father, Jan Steven's just made that strategy a little harder.

"Jan Stevens, the father of the late Ambassador Christopher Stevens killed in Benghazi, Libya on Sept. 11, 2012, said that his son's death should not be a political issue in the campaign, in an interview with Bloomberg published Sunday."

“It would really be abhorrent to make this into a campaign issue,” Stevens, 77, said. “The security matters are being adequately investigated,” Stevens said. “We don’t pretend to be experts in security. It has to be objectively examined. That’s where it belongs. It does not belong in the campaign arena.”
He continued:
“I’m not sure exactly what he’s been saying and not saying, but our position is it would be a real shame if this were politicized,” Stevens said, referring to Romney. “Our concern now is memorializing Chris and remembering his contribution to the country.”

We owe Jan Steven's a debt of gratitude that while mourning the unthinkable loss of his son he still does this valuable public service for calling out Romney. Romney is now 0 for 2 in politicizing the victims of the attack on the Libyan embassy. The mother of the slain Navy Seal had also smacked down Romney.

That was particularly embarrassing as he tried to claim to know the young man well from a meeting they had 3 years ago, that Glen Doherty's friend tells us is totally contrived, In fact, Romney introduced himself 4 different times to Doherty. This is typical Romney-after all he wasn't really there for him, he was just a campaign prop.

This shows how transparent Romney's attempt to politicize this very sad tragedy is. So this ought to be the first thing the President points out when Romney inevitably uses his "smoking gun" on Libya. He should point out that they have conducted a comprehensive and transparent investigation-unlike George W. Bush after 9/11 in 2001-and that Ambassador Steven's father says they have and has asked the Governor not to politicize this-as has also been the request of Barbara Doherty regarding her son's death.

These two brave, suffering parents have done us a tremendous service in blunting Romney's attacks and showing them for the rank opportunism that they are. I trust the President will mention them Tuesday night.
