In Politics They Love You When You're not Running for Anything

Matt Yglesias continues his perfect record of relentless Hillary bashing.

He, of course, jumped all over her comment at Nancy Reagan's funeral to tar her has little more than a homophobe because she was trying to say something nice at Nancy Reagan's funeral. I mean it's not easy praising Nancy Reagan-I was never a fan.

"What HRC said was accurate-that Nancy did push Reagan late in his Administration to simply acknowledge there was an AIDs epidemic. HRC didn't say she did much to deal with the problem but Reagan did at least say there was an epidemic which is the first step."

"In any case, Hillary afterwords apologized when she was criticized on this. But, Yglesias won't be deprived of his chance to twist the knife even after an apology."

"Nancy Reagan was, it seems, relatively more open to those activists' arguments than many other key players in the Reagan administration. But the fact that Clinton would point to Ronald and Nancy Reagan as leaders on a national conversation around AIDS, rather than to the activists themselves, is revealing of her insider perspective on social change."

Here we go. She didn't say they were leaders just that for the President to acknowledge the epidemic is an important moment in a national conversation. Now that was it. They did nothing to follow up. But it was a step to at least admit there was an epidemic and Nancy was one of those who pushed Reagan do do it.

In another recent post, Yglesias notes that President Obama now has an approval rating over 50 percent for the first time since early 2013.

"Hillary Clinton has a net favorable rating that is unprecedentedly bad for a non-incumbent major party presidential nominee. The good news for Democrats is that the Republican frontrunner, Donald Trump, does much worse on this score (as does Ted Cruz). So there's no need to panic."

"Still, as Barack Obama's approval rating drifts up in 2016 it's hard not to notice that the party isn't exactly fielding its strongest talent. Most Americans approve of the job Obama is doing as president. He is viewed more favorably than Clinton, and, in a pretty hard-to-beat combination, he is both considerably younger than Clinton and also manages to edge her out in experience and qualifications."

"Not only would he be a stronger nominee, his presence on the ballot would give a greater coherence to the election."

Nice how Yglesias got in that ageist slur there.

Sure Obama is more popular than her now, but this wasn't the case in 2011. Indeed, back then there was talk of getting rid of Biden and replacing him with her. This is a basic rule of politics. They love you as long as you are not running for anything.

While she was Secretary of State she was very popular. Once she got in the ring then her negatives started going up. Such is politics. Obama is in many was a nonpolitical figure now.

Even Republicans don't attack him much anymore-as he's leaving anyway. This isn't to say I don't love Obama and he doesn't deserve to be back over 50 percent. But it is a fact that when you put your hat in the ring and ask for votes, your press gets a lot more unpleasant.

Her numbers are down right now as she's been attacked relentlessly by the GOP, by Bernie and his Emoprogs, by Hillary hating pundits like Yglesias.
